Household Relief Payments Pass House with Strong Bipartisan Support
Bill Provides up to $1,000 Relief Payments to New Mexico Households
Santa Fe, NM- Today, the House passed HB 2, the Household Relief Payments bill, to send direct payments to New Mexicans to provide relief from the economic impact of rising gas prices and other necessities.
“Many working New Mexico families have had to cut back on day-to-day expenses to make ends meet,” said House Majority Leader Javier Martínez (D-Albuquerque). “This Special Session, we are working together to provide relief to working families and make sure that every New Mexican can benefit from the record revenues to our state.”
These payments will consist of a total of two $250 payments for individuals and two $500 payments for joint filers. All New Mexicans who file a state tax return will receive the funds and there will be no “means test” or income cap. Seniors, the disabled, or others with little or no taxable income will also be eligible to receive direct relief payments.
“We have the opportunity to build on the work we did during the recent 30-day session to put more money back into the pockets of New Mexicans at a time when they need it,” said House Taxation & Revenue Committee Chair, Representative Christine Chandler (D-Los Alamos).
HB 2 passed by a vote of 51 to 13. The House also passed measures in the recent 30-day legislative session to provide relief to working New Mexicans with tax rebates and a child income tax credit.
The bill now goes to the Senate for a floor vote. The Household Relief Payments bill is one of two legislative priorities during this Special Session which is focused on bringing relief to families and investing in communities across New Mexico.
