House Speaker Condemns SCOTUS Decision Overturning Affirmative Action

Santa Fe, N.M. - Today, the U.S. Supreme Court struck down the use of affirmative action in college admissions, overturning decades of precedent. New Mexico House Speaker Javier Martínez (D-Albuquerque) issued the following statement in response.

“Once again, a rogue Supreme Court is endangering Americans’ fundamental rights, freedoms, and protections. By rolling back decades of progress toward racial equity in education, we risk repeating a long, dark history of discrimination and exclusion within the very system intended to foster opportunity.

In New Mexico, we value the unique cultures, backgrounds, and perspectives of our neighbors and understand that prioritizing diversity and inclusion within our institutions makes us stronger, smarter, and more equitable. We must keep pushing for policies that give every person a fair shot and deliver on the promise of equal access to education for all.”
