House Democrats Applaud Enormous Clean Energy and Economic Development Project in Albuquerque
New solar manufacturing plant will create hundreds of good-paying jobs, bring billions of dollars to the state, and position New Mexico as a leader in the growing clean energy industry
Albuquerque, NM - Today, House Democrats joined Governor Michelle Lujan Grisham as she announced that Maxeon Solar Technologies plans to open a massive solar cell and panel manufacturing center in Albuquerque’s Mesa del Sol neighborhood.
The 1.9 million-square-foot state-of-the-art complex is expected to create up to 1,800 good-paying jobs, bring over $4 billion dollars in economic development to the state, and manufacture up to 8 million solar panels per year.
House Democrats issued the following statements applauding this news:
“Our transition to clean energy will only succeed if it is just for our workers and communities - that means developing new and sustainable industries to support New Mexico’s working families and our economy as a whole,” said House Speaker Javier Martínez (D-Albuquerque). “This is the largest economic development project our state has seen in decades and it has transformative potential for our economy, workers, and environment.”
“This new facility will create hundreds of good-paying jobs for New Mexicans, while helping us reduce emissions and reach critical climate goals,” said Representative Nathan Small (D-Las Cruces), who serves as Chair of the House Appropriations and Finance Committee (HAFC). “Today is a significant milestone in our journey to zero-carbon emissions energy that protects our air, land, and water, and supports the workers at the heart of our economy.”
“A successful company in a burgeoning industry selecting New Mexico for its first U.S. plant is a testament to our strong workforce and to the business-friendly environment we’ve established,” said Representative Meredith Dixon (D-Albuquerque), Vice Chair of HAFC. “This new facility will solidify New Mexico’s position as a national leader in clean energy, diversify our economy, and provide good, sustainable jobs for New Mexicans for generations to come.”
