Congressional People’s Map Passes House Committee

Nearly 90% based on the People’s Map from the Citizens Redistricting Committee, CS SB1 bridges NM’s urban/rural divide and make districts more competitive to give voters real choice

Santa Fe, N.M. – The updated map for New Mexico’s Congressional districts passed the House State Government, Elections & Indian Affairs Committee (HSEIC) today with a 6-3 vote. The legislation, Senate Judiciary Committee (SJC) substitute for Senate Bill 1, will head next to the House Floor for a full vote. 

Sponsored by Rep. Georgene Louis (D-Albuquerque), Senator Joseph Cervantes (D-Las Cruces), and Senator Daniel Ivey-Soto (D-Albuquerque), this map is a nearly 90 percent reflection of the People’s Map, developed by the independent Citizens Redistricting Committee. The map bridges the urban/rural divide in the state, and increases the Hispanic voting age population, giving greater voice to this historically marginalized community. 

“Senate Bill 1 makes Congressional districts more competitive, as opposed to creating safe seats for one party or the other and increasing dangerous polarization,” said Rep. Louis. “Voters should have a real choice when electing the Representatives who will be their voice in Washington, D.C., and this bill creates greater unity in our state, ensuring that our federal delegation represents the whole of New Mexico and not just the interests of one particular region, segment, or industry.”  

The Roundhouse is open to the public for this special session, and proof of full COVID-19 vaccination will be required to enter the building. Virtual public participation will also be available.
