Speaker Martínez Applauds APD’s Response to Destructive Vandalism in Old Town

Albuquerque, N.M.  - Today, New Mexico House Speaker Javier Martínez (D-Albuquerque) issued the following statement regarding the recent destructive vandalism targeting businesses in Albuquerque’s historic Old Town neighborhood and the response from the city of Albuquerque and the Albuquerque Police Department.

“I have been in touch with a number of my constituents who own and operate businesses in Old Town. The destruction and vandalism occurring in this neighborhood is unacceptable. This comes down to enforcing our laws, so I requested that APD develop a tactical plan for keeping the area safe.

I am pleased that the city has agreed to increase patrols and install cameras in Old Town. I am especially grateful to the merchants for organizing and mobilizing to address this issue and to Chief Medina for taking my calls and working with us to find solutions. These are critical steps that will help us improve the safety of our community and the security of local businesses.

My office will continue to monitor the situation closely and offer every resource available to address these issues."
