Speaker Egolf Responds to Supreme Court Ruling Jeopardizing Women’s Healthcare
Today’s Dobbs v. Jackson decision overturns decades of hard-fought abortion rights under
Roe v. Wade
Santa Fe, N.M. - Following this morning’s announcement that the U.S. Supreme Court has overturned the historic abortion protections in Roe v. Wade, New Mexico Speaker of the House Brian Egolf (D-Santa Fe) issued the following statement:
“It is a sad day for our nation as we
witness our Supreme Court stripping away one of our citizens’ most fundamental human rights. Today’s ruling will have devastating consequences for women's rights and health nationwide. Make no mistake, this ruling is the result of decades of work by Republicans to carefully plan this assault on the rights of women and families.
Our state remains a safe haven for New Mexicans and people from across the country seeking reproductive healthcare. As a result of this ruling, the new, grim reality for so many Americans will be that access to needed healthcare is determined by where you live or how much money you make.
This decision reflects a Supreme Court that is out of touch with the majority of Americans and New Mexicans, who support the right to safe, legal abortion.
This is devastating news, but we have the power to push back. The right to decide if, when, and how we start a family is one of our most fundamental freedoms. Our fundamental rights are on the ballot in November and we must fight for them.”
