Speaker Egolf Responds to Passing of Former Chief Clerk Steve Arias
Arias’s distinguished career in the Legislature spanned four decades, including 32 years as Chief Clerk of the New Mexico House of Representatives
Santa Fe, N.M. - Following the news that former Chief Clerk of the New Mexico House of Representatives Stephen Arias passed away, Speaker of the House Brian Egolf issued the following statement.
“I am deeply saddened by the loss of my dear friend and colleague Steve Arias. Steve served the Legislature and the people of New Mexico honorably for nearly 40 years. From his earliest days as a page to his long tenure as Chief Clerk of the House, he distinguished himself through his commitment to public service and through the care and respect with which he treated his colleagues, lawmakers, and constituents.
I was privileged to have the opportunity to learn from Steve when I was elected to the House in 2009. As a young legislator, I benefited tremendously from the depth of his knowledge and wisdom, as well as his generosity with his time. I was proud to call Steve my friend and grateful that our friendship continued long after his retirement in 2014. My thoughts and prayers are with the Arias family, especially his wife Victoria, their sons, and their grandchildren, in this difficult time.”
