Martha Garcia Sworn in to New Mexico House

Martha Garcia will fill the House District 6 seat vacated by Rep. Eliseo “Lee” Alcon who resigned in November and passed away earlier this year

Santa Fe, N.M. - Today, Martha Garcia of Pine Hill was sworn in to represent New Mexico House District 6, following the retirement and death of Rep. Eliseo Lee Acon (D-Milan) who represented the district for more than 16 years. Governor Michelle Lujan Grisham announced Garcia’s appointment yesterday.

Rep. Garcia, who is Diné, is the former president of the Ramah-Navajo school board and a former Cibola County Commissioner.

“I am grateful to my community for entrusting me with this honor and this responsibility and I look forward to serving as their voice in our Roundhouse,” said Rep. Garcia. “My commitment to public service is unwavering. I will continue fighting for District 6, ensuring our communities receive the resources and policies that drive real, positive change.”

Garcia will sit on the House Rural Development, Land Grants, and Cultural Affairs and the House Education Committee. House District 6 spans parts of Cibola and McKinley Counties. Once sworn-in, Garcia will fulfill the rest of Rep. Alcon’s two year-term in the New Mexico House of Representatives.
