House Passes Bill to Support New Mexicans in Workforce Training

Pilot program would provide monetary stipends to help New Mexicans advance their careers without financial strain

Santa Fe, N.M. -  Tonight, the House of Representatives approved legislation to support New Mexicans’ participation in training and development programs to advance their careers. 

Passed by a bipartisan vote of 41-13, House Bill 303 would establish a three-year pilot program to provide stipends to adults attending workforce training programs. The funds would be administered by the Higher Education Department to help participants cover housing, food, and transportation expenses, as well as program registration costs. 

“Many New Mexicans are living paycheck-to-paycheck, and can’t afford to take time off work for the training needed to move up in their field or change career paths,” said Rep. Linda Serrato (D-Santa Fe). “This pilot program will provide necessary financial support, so folks can keep food on the table while also working to build a better future for their families and become part of our future workforce.”  

The pilot program would be supported by $1 million in the budget. House Bill 303 also requires the Higher Education Department to provide annual reports on the outcomes of the pilot program to the Legislative Education Study Committee. 

House Bill 303 is also sponsored by Rep. Cristina Parajón (D-Albuquerque). It is the 50th bill passed by the House and now heads to the Senate.
