Bill to Give Veteran and Native Owned Local Businesses Preference in State Contracting Passes the House

Santa Fe, NM-  SB 39, the Buy New Mexico which would increase the bidding preference for New Mexico businesses owned by Native Americans or veterans when the state seeks goods and services passed the House by a unanimous vote of 67 to 0 late Monday night. 

The legislation would grant in-state preference to Native American businesses and also increase preferences for veteran-owned businesses in state contracting. The state of New Mexico and local agencies invest billions of dollars in companies to buy goods and services every year. The goal of the Buy New Mexico initiative is to drive more of those dollars to locally owned businesses, and expanding our economy and creating more jobs.

The legislation was sponsored by Representative Harry Garcia (D-Grants), Senators Benny Shendo, Jr. (D-Jemez Pueblo) and Harold Pope (D-Albuquerque). 

“New Mexico's veterans have sacrificed so much for our freedoms. They have earned the right to be at the top of the list when our state invests money in contracts with businesses,” said Rep. Harry Garcia. “I am proud to support expanding the Buy New Mexico Initiative to give preference to veteran and tribal owned local businesses in government contracting.”

The bill now goes to the Governor's desk for her signature, and she is expected to sign it.
