Bill to Enhance Penalties for Dangerous Crimes Passes Floor

Santa Fe, NM- Tonight, the House passed another crucial public safety bill with a bipartisan vote of 50 to 17. HB 68 would enhance sentencing for certain dangerous crimes.

HB 68, sponsored by Representatives Meredith Dixon (D-Albuquerque), Pamelya Herndon (D-Albuquerque), and Marian Matthews (D-Albuquerque) increases penalties for violent gun crimes including enhancing the penalty for brandishing a firearm from a third-degree felony to a second-degree felony. 

The bill would also expand sentencing for aggravated fleeing from a law enforcement officer, and make it a crime to threaten injury, damage, or violence in certain public places. 

“This legislation will help our law enforcement target the most dangerous offenders to prevent them from causing further violence,” said Rep. Dixon. “It is another tool that we can use, in conjunction with investments in education and behavioral health to address crime and make our communities safer.” 

The Roundhouse is open to the public for the session. Proof of full COVID-19 vaccination will be required to enter the building.
