Bill Increasing Penalties for Operating a Chop Shop Passes First Committee
Santa Fe, NM- Legislation intended to crack down on New Mexico’s stolen vehicle black market, by making illegally dismantling a stolen motor vehicle or being involved with a “chop shop” a third degree felony passed in the House Consumer & Public Affairs Committee with a bipartisan unanimous vote.
“This legislation makes our streets safer by giving law enforcement the tools they need to target those making big profits on auto theft and driving up the demand for stolen cars,” said Representative Natalie Figueroa (D-Albuquerque).
The bill which aims to reduce rising auto and catalytic converter thefts, is sponsored by Representatives Figueroa, Meredith Dixon (D-Albuquerque), Joy Garratt (D-Albuquerque), William "Bill" Rehm (R-Albuquerque), and Joshua Hernandez (R-Rio Rancho).
