Albuquerque Reps Partner with City & Western Sky for Backpack Giveaway
Over 3,500 local kids received new backpacks filled with school supplies, clothing vouchers, sports physicals & more
Albuquerque, N.M. - New Mexico House Democratic Reps. Debbie Sariñana, Pamelya Herndon and Natalie Figueroa teamed up with the City of Albuquerque, Western Sky Community Care, and Duke City Cares on Sunday, August 7 to provide supply-filled backpacks and more to 3,500 local children in need at the Cruzin' into the School Year event.
Students attending the free event at Civic Plaza received backpacks filled with school supplies, vouchers for clothes, on-site haircuts/styles, sports physicals, back-to-school shots, pictures, books, and snacks, while also enjoying a car show.
“After teaching in Albuquerque for two decades, I've seen firsthand how students can thrive when they have the supplies and clothing they need to begin the school year with confidence and excitement,” said Rep. Sariñana. “My fellow House Democrats and I are deeply invested in ensuring every child in New Mexico gets a high quality education, by both passing impactful legislation and supporting events like this, which equip our students for success.”
“Western Sky Community Care believes no family should face financial strain to get their children prepared for school,” said Western Sky President and CEO Jean Wilms. “Every year, Western Sky, in partnership with our community partners, helps thousands of New Mexican students begin the new school year with supplies that they need at no cost, through our Back-to-School Program. When our children are prepared, New Mexico’s future is brighter.”
“Duke City Cares is committed to promoting health and wellness for the youth of New Mexico and wants each student to be able to start the school year with support from their medical family,” said Kelly Spring, Director Operations at Duke City Cares. “Whether it be providing Sports Physicals, annual physical check-ups, vaccinations, home medical care, or urgent care attention, Duke City Cares is here to serve with a wealth of comprehensive care for all New Mexican children and their family members.”
